Traveling Out of the Country for Plastic Surgery: Potential Costs to Your Health and Wallet

Traveling out of the country for plastic surgery is a trend that is gaining exposure as the idea of combining plastic surgery with a “vacation” is enticing. Considering that the up-front cost is generally less expensive when compared with cost of plastic surgery in the U.S. the idea of traveling out of the country for plastic surgery suddenly becomes more appealing. While there are plenty of highly regarded plastic surgeons around the world, how is one able to decipher who is properly trained, has credentials comparable to what he/she would have in the U.S., has a credentialed surgical facility in which he/she performs surgery, and has licensed qualified anesthesiologists who administer anesthesia? The following are some points to consider when considering traveling abroad for plastic surgery:

Credentialing: In the U.S., there are strict guidelines that must be followed in order to obtain and maintain surgical and facility credentialing. Additionally, a U.S. board certified plastic surgeon must display expertise by passing rigorous oral and written examinations and stay current with advances in medicine and surgical techniques through continuing education. Many countries outside the U.S. have less stringent guidelines to adhere to which can increase surgical risks and complications and negatively affect a patient’s safety and surgical result.

One can locate credentials for board certified plastic surgeons relatively easily as there are boards which ensure that he/she achieves and maintains the highest possible level of expertise and competence. This ensures the most reliable, predictable and safe outcome for patients. The following governing boards were established specifically to credential plastic surgeons.

American Board of Medical Specialties:        www.abms.org

American Board of Plastic Surgery:               www.abplsurg.org

American Society of Plastic Surgeons:          www.plasticsurgery.org

Recovery and post-op care: What is the protocol if a complication arises once a patient arrives home? Most plastic surgeons in the U.S. will not see a patient for follow-ups or a complication/ side effect unless he/she performed the surgery. It is impossible for the local plastic surgeon to know for sure what was done during the surgery so most will steer clear of caring for any patient who has had surgery abroad. This can create a situation where recovery and healing is less than ideal. If a local plastic surgeon will not see patients for post-op or follow-up appointments, how will the necessary care be given? Unfortunately for the patient, the outcome may include a return to the country where surgery took place. This brings up the next point to consider…cost.

Cost: Cost is often times the number one reason patients seek to have plastic surgery outside the U.S. It is not uncommon for the costs associated with plastic surgery to be less than they are in the U.S. and that can be tied to the points illustrated earlier. The reality is that inexpensive plastic surgery can in fact become very costly when one considers the possible risk of post-surgical complications, revision surgeries and follow-up care. These are costly and necessary if a procedure does not yield the anticipated results and can quickly amount to more than the original surgery would have cost in the U.S.

With thorough research, a good result can be achieved with plastic surgery abroad. However, consider and research all options before making the decision to have any type of plastic surgery. The most important point to understand is that this is elective surgery. It is not medically necessary so choose wisely to help decrease the possible risk of needing medical attention at home, revision surgery and additional costs.

Discount Plastic Surgery: What Does it Really Cost You?

face_money image for blog

In a struggling economy, “bargain shopping” becomes appealing. While the bargain shopping mentality can be successfully applied to many purchases, you should consider the pros and cons of selecting a plastic surgeon based solely on budget. While it is important to be mindful of your budget, it is equally important to weigh other important factors such as: board certification in plastic surgery (not cosmetic surgery), experience and expertise and bedside manner prior to making a decision. Bargain shopping for plastic surgery may yield a poor result and increase surgical risks and complications during and after surgery.

Conventional wisdom reminds us of the old saying “you get what you pay for”. Often, quality is tied to cost, and expertise frequently determines market value. When selecting a plastic surgeon, consider his/ her level of training, board certification in plastic surgery and depth of experience. Less experience and expertise can be associated with lower cost, deeper discounts and frequent price adjustments, which are typically tied to economic trends. You may find that plastic surgeons who are well established as experts typically don’t waiver much with their pricing. In this scenario, you truly do “get you what paid for” and it is to your benefit.

Continuing education and membership in professional societies reflect a surgeon’s interest in maintaining skills and keeping current with new information. Selecting a plastic surgeon who is current with board certifications in plastic surgery (not cosmetic surgery) and professional societies provides an extra level of comfort and safety to the patient. Keep in mind that having plastic surgery with a highly credentialed and experienced plastic surgeon can increase patient satisfaction but can also be associated with higher costs. Again, remember that “you get what you pay for”.

Remember to look closely at the plastic surgeon’s office, surgical facility and staff. You also want to pay attention to the plastic surgeon’s bedside manner as this can be a reflection of the care you will receive during surgery and throughout your post-operative care and follow-ups. Consider proximity to the physician’s office and the surgeon’s availability following surgery. Is the surgeon accessible to you in your community or are you visiting one of several offices? Dr. Gallas is a board certified plastic surgeon who has performed thousands of cosmetic surgeries and has exclusively served the Katy community for 15 years.

It is understandable that budget needs to be a contributing factor when selecting a plastic surgeon, however; focus also needs to be placed on experience, expertise, credentialing, patient satisfaction reviews, and your safety. When you don’t let budget alone dictate your decision, you will find that you get more than a great value for you money, you will get peace of mind.

Selecting a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon 101

Plastic surgeon consult image for blogCongratulations, you’ve done your research, which is an important first step in deciding if plastic surgery is right for you.  A potential patient should educate themselves about the benefits, risks and complications associated with plastic surgery. It is also important to get referrals from family and friends and find a plastic surgeon who is knowledgeable. However, there is nothing more important than experience, expertise and board certification. Unfortunately, many people don’t understand what board certification is, what it means or why it is important. A skilled, board certified  plastic surgeon will help ensure you get the best possible results while remaining focused on your safety during surgery and recovery.

What Is Board Certification & Why It Matters

After medical school, a doctor can choose a specialty of interest, such as plastic surgery. In order to become a specialist, a doctor must complete a residency and sometimes a fellowship in their chosen field. For example, Dr. Gallas completed residencies in both general surgery and plastic surgery and then went on for additional training by completing a fellowship in reconstructive plastic surgery. Upon completion of residency, board certification can be obtained once extensive oral and written examinations are taken and letters of recommendation and data on cases performed are submitted. Additionally, board certified plastic surgeons must continue their education by completing MOC, or Maintenance of Certification, which keeps the physician current with the latest advancements in the science of medicine, plastic surgery and patient safety. This is important to you, the patient, as it can yield high patient satisfaction and low risk of surgical complications.

Finding a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

The only recognized medical board certifying agency in the U.S. is the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). There are other agencies that provide medical specialty certificates, but these should not be confused with board certification by the ABMS.

In most states, including Texas, a doctor is not required to be board certified in plastic surgery in order to perform plastic surgery. This may be surprising to many, but a physician can actually perform plastic surgery and say they are board certified, but their board certification can be in ANY specialty.  Furthermore, you have to hold a medical license, but do not have to be board certified at all to practice medicine in Texas.  When you select a plastic surgeon who is ABMS certified in plastic surgery, you are providing yourself with peace of mind knowing that you have selected a plastic surgeon who has the highest possible credentials, the most up to date scientific knowledge, expertise and experience in plastic surgery, and most importantly…your best interest in mind. It can be confusing trying to find a properly certified plastic surgeon by reviewing their website alone. Below are resources, that can help you search for board certified plastic surgeons in your area. This is an excellent first step in finding a surgeon who is highly qualified, highly experienced and highly respected.
