Motherhood brings joy, but it can also bring significant changes to a woman’s body. Many mothers are interested in regaining their pre-pregnancy shape and self-confidence, and a Mommy Makeover might just be the answer.

Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover surgery targets the areas most affected by pregnancy and breastfeeding to restore more youthful contours. Women considering a Mommy Makeover should not smoke, be in good overall health, have no plans for future pregnancies (as this can impact the quality of results), and have realistic expectations.

Mommy Makeover surgery benefits women who hope to:

  • Elevate breast position and restore volume
  • Remove sagging abdominal skin and stubborn pockets of fat
  • Slim the belly and waist
  • Eliminate or reduce stretch marks

To see if you are a candidate for a Mommy Makeover, contact Dr. Gallas by calling our Katy office at (281) 646-1114 to set up a consultation.

What Is Included in a Mommy Makeover?

Your Mommy Makeover is a combination of surgical procedures performed under general anesthesia with the assistance of a board-certified anesthesiologist who will monitor your vitals to ensure your safety.

Since every woman’s body responds to pregnancy differently, there are no set requirements for a Mommy Makeover. This procedure is customized to meet your needs and goals.

Breast Lift Surgery

Weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and aging can significantly impact a woman’s breasts, causing them to appear deflated and sag.

Breast lift surgery eliminates this sag by tightening the tissues and removing excess skin. A breast lift is commonly performed using the anchor technique, where the incision extends around the areola, horizontally down the lower pole of the breasts, and across the folds.

During this procedure:

  • The glandular tissues in the breasts are tightened and reshaped.
  • The nipple-areola complexes are often reduced and repositioned in the center of the breast.
  • Excess skin is trimmed away.

Smaller incisions may be used for women with less ptosis (breast sag).

Breast Augmentation

Women who lose breast volume after pregnancy may also benefit from breast augmentation. Breast augmentation uses saline or silicone implants to restore fullness that has been lost.

These implants are inserted through incisions around the areola or within the inframammary fold and situated either above or below the pectoral muscle.

Breast implants are highly customizable and result in a younger-looking, more attractive cleavage.

Tummy Tuck

Abdominal muscles stretch during pregnancy, often causing them to separate. When this occurs, diet and exercise cannot restore loose core muscles, and tummy tuck surgery can repair this separation and remove excess abdominal skin.

Tummy tuck surgery allows you to achieve a flatter, tighter abdomen and waist.

Liposuction

Women accumulate and store fat deposits during pregnancy. Unfortunately, these new fatty pockets do not always disappear after childbirth.

Liposuction removes excess fat from the abdomen, hips, flanks, thighs, buttocks, back, arms, and under the neck. Dr. Gallas offers tumescent liposuction and the VASERlipo® system, which uses ultrasound to gently and precisely remove areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Alternative Combination Procedures

Most procedures performed in a Mommy Makeover address the breasts and the abdomen, but they are not the only areas affected by one or more pregnancies. While liposuction can reduce fat in other regions of the body, it cannot remove excess skin.

A thigh lift or arm lift can be added for patients with excess skin on the thigh or arms.

Women can also combine their Mommy Makeover with labiaplasty to restore the look and comfort of their vagina.

What Will My Mommy Makeover Recovery Be Like?

Mommy Makeover is an outpatient procedure, and you can return home within a few hours of your surgery. You will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first few days of your recovery to assist with household chores like cleaning, cooking, and childcare.

Compression dressings/garments may be wrapped around breasts, abdomen, and other treated areas. These garments will minimize the amount of bruising and swelling and promote blood circulation.

Dr. Gallas will advise you on how long to wear these compression garments and when to remove any surgical tape or gauze.

Patients should expect some tenderness following their Mommy Makeover, with many women requiring at least two weeks off of work and their normal day-to-day activities. Oral pain medication will be prescribed to you to alleviate any discomfort, and many women choose to switch to over-the-counter pain medication after a few days.

Women should refrain from lifting, pushing, or pulling anything over 10 pounds or participating in strenuous exercises for at least six weeks.

When Will I See My Mommy Makeover Results?

While the results of your Mommy Makeover start to take shape immediately, bruising and swelling will obscure the quality of these initial results. Most swelling will dissipate within the first few weeks, but some may persist for up to six months.

Most women remain satisfied with their Mommy Makeover results for several years. Women should maintain a stable weight to extend the longevity of the results. While these procedures will not prevent you from having more children, subsequent pregnancies will impact your new body shape.

What Is the Cost of a Mommy Makeover?

Due to the options and customization of this procedure, the cost will vary based on your goals, the extent of surgery, anesthesia costs, facility fees, etc. During your consultation with Dr. Gallas, we will provide you with a specific, all-inclusive price for your procedure.

Mommy Makeover FAQ

Can I have a Mommy Makeover if I plan to have more children?

While it’s possible to have more children after a Mommy Makeover, it’s generally advisable to wait until you have completed your family before undergoing the procedure. Pregnancy and childbirth can reverse your surgery results, so it’s best to discuss your family plans with your surgeon to make an informed decision.

Will I have visible scars after a Mommy Makeover?

Scarring is a natural part of any surgical procedure. However, plastic surgeons make efforts to minimize scarring by placing incisions strategically and using techniques that help scars fade over time. Scar care, such as massage and topical treatments, can further help reduce their visibility.

Are the results of a Mommy Makeover permanent?

The results of a Mommy Makeover can be long lasting, but they are not entirely permanent. Factors like aging, weight fluctuations, and lifestyle choices can influence how long the results last. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through diet and exercise can help you enjoy your Mommy Makeover results for years.

Does insurance cover Mommy Makeovers?

Mommy Makeovers are considered elective cosmetic procedures, and as such, they are not covered by health insurance. Patients are responsible for the cost of the surgery and any associated fees. In some rare cases, a breast reduction may be covered if large breasts are causing severe neck, shoulder, or back pain. Dr. Gallas offers financing options to help make the procedure more affordable.

What risks are associated with Mommy Makeovers?

Like any surgical procedure, Mommy Makeovers carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, scarring, and anesthesia-related complications. Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience in Mommy Makeovers is crucial to minimize these risks. Following your surgeon’s pre and post-operative instructions is essential for a safe and successful outcome.

When is the best time to consider a Mommy Makeover?

The best time to consider a Mommy Makeover is after you have completed your family and reached a stable weight. Being in good overall health and having realistic expectations about the outcomes is also essential. Consult a plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and determine the most suitable timing for your procedure.
