A misshapen nose can interfere with facial harmony and lead to emotional insecurities. Regardless of whether or not you have always been displeased by your nasal contour or you experienced trauma to the nose, rhinoplasty—or a nose job—creates a harmonious, balanced aesthetic.

Rhinoplasty alters the shape and structure of the nose to improve aesthetics and nasal function.

Am I a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

Candidates for rhinoplasty have either aesthetic or functional nasal concerns. These concerns can be congenital or can be the result of an injury. Ideal rhinoplasty candidates do not smoke, are in good health, and have realistic expectations of their results.

Rhinoplasty can benefit men and women who are displeased with:

  • Nasal humps
  • Upturned nasal tips
  • Drooping nasal tips
  • Flared nostrils
  • Narrow nostrils
  • The crookedness of the nose
  • Breathing difficulties

To see if you are a candidate for rhinoplasty, contact Dr. Gallas at our Katy office by calling (281) 646-1114.

How Is Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia.

Depending on your specific needs, your nasal structure will be augmented using cartilage or reduced by physically removing a portion of the bone or cartilage.

Nasal augmentation with cartilage grafts is performed on noses that require greater projection or the build-up of the bridge. Cartilage for the graft is usually taken from the septum of the nose. Alternatively, cartilage can be removed from the ear.

On rare occasions, cartilage will need to be taken from the rib, but Dr. Gallas prefers not to do this as it is more invasive and requires the recovery of two different areas.

Nasal reduction is performed when a nose has an unwanted bump, has a hump, or is too large for the surrounding features. Bone and cartilage are carefully shaved down to shape and contour the nose.

If you are suffering from breathing abnormalities, a variation of rhinoplasty—known as septoplasty—is performed to repair a deviated septum. This procedure straightens the septum and allows for even airflow between the nostrils.

What Is Open Rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty involves a zig-zag incision made along the columella. The columella is the strip of cartilage between the two nostrils. This incision allows for the skin of the nose to be pulled back, exposing the internal structure of the nose.

This technique is ideal for more complex rhinoplasty procedures.

Dr. Gallas prefers this technique as it allows for greater visibility of the internal structure of the nose.

What Is Closed Rhinoplasty?

Closed rhinoplasty uses incisions made on the inside of the nostrils to avoid any visible post-operative scarring.

The closed technique can be applied to both nasal reduction and nasal augmentation. Still, it is not often chosen for complex rhinoplasty cases as it does not allow for clear visibility of the internal nasal structure.

What Is the Cost of Rhinoplasty?

Due to how personalized this procedure is, the cost of your rhinoplasty will vary based on your goals and needs, and the amount of time in the operating room with anesthesia costs and facility fees. During your individual consultation with Dr. Gallas, we will be able to provide you with a specific price for your procedure. What Will My Rhinoplasty Recovery Be Like?

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure, and you will return home within a few hours of your surgery. Your nose may be packed with gauze, and an external splint will be applied to ensure that your nose is protected while it is healing.  This nasal packing may be uncomfortable, and it may make it difficult to breathe through your nose. Alternatively, a soft internal splint could be used, which is designed for simple removal and to make nasal breathing easier.

Bruising and swelling will develop on the nose and beneath the eyes. This bruising and swelling will take several weeks to subside. Prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication can alleviate most post-operative discomfort.

Most rhinoplasty patients can return to work or school after one week, but bruising and swelling will still be visible.

When Will I See My Rhinoplasty Results?

Most of the bruising and swelling dissipates within two to four weeks, and you will be able to see your new nasal contour at that time. Some internal swelling may take months to resolve, however, and it may take up to one year for your nose to completely heal.

Once completely healed, the results of your rhinoplasty typically do not change over time. Your nose will age gradually and gracefully with the rest of your face.
